Zach Pietrini and the Broken Bones welcomes us to a dimly lit and smoke-filled underground world of American punk-folk music. The music on Death and His Many Faces brings depth in regards to musical style as well as true grit and real emotions that are displayed simply by sound and poetic lyrics. This is the latest album from the band and it is influenced by recent hardships that in turn have become fountains of grand inspiration. Birthed out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin he band carries the true soul and style of the region and duly represents the South. The first track on the nine-track album “One More Soul” sings about burning in hell; “Oh the fire is going to burn us alive… consumed in the light, hell is glowing bright, one more soul tonight.” The lyrics within this track almost seem to illustrate a pact with the devil, a ritual of some kind where everyone’s in on the deal and one by one every one gets their soul taken away in turn. There is true Tennessee folk passion in this song and it just makes you want to jump around like a madman and break out in tears at the same time. The voice of the main singer brings passion, serenity and a bit of darkness to each and every song on the album. The track “Love is War” uses a combination of metaphors and the vocalist’s smooth demeanor to draw a situation that almost anyone can relate to. There is a powerful chorus that makes you completely part of the scene that’s being written right before your very eyes; “Set fire to the whole world now, it’s a blaze and it will never burn out and as long as we got our lungs we’re shouting from the roof top.” The addition of a vintage Spanish sounding horn and percussion gives the song a feeling of classical love, it is a beautiful ironic twist here and the song abruptly ends with “love is war.” Overall this album is a great listen and is not mundane or ordinary at any turn. The sound on this release is high quality and there is great usage of instruments throughout. Death and His Many Faces is really a success in regards to musical composition and anyone intrigued by folk or experimental rock will fall in love with this collection of tracks.
