On Younger Me’s self-titled release entitled Younger Me, blissful lyrics fall like individual shooting stars into a rhythmic ocean of choppy Fender Rhodes loops, lifting and flowing ceaselessly with just a hint of electronic influence guiding its natural way. There is a certain delicacy and smoothness here, not the sort of chaotic, distorted repetition of noise that constitutes most pop punk of this day and age, and most importantly, a mixture of influences stand out during a careful listen. At first glance the band Younger Me may seem shallow, but there is a lot more to be stirred up beneath the seemingly still depths. The York, Pennsylvania trio Younger Me's debut release was recorded, mixed, and mastered in the band's home studio, and they are not signed to a major label---as of yet. Still, their do-it-yourself approach doesn't fall flat on its face; rather, this album sounds polished and ready to hit shelves already, a good product having been borne out of an admittedly raw, clumsy approach. There is always room for them to grow, and with a new record in the works for 2013, they likely will not hold back. The sound that pervades this work is one of youthful suburban rebellion, and in fact rattles with the heaviness of rolling drum intros and captures the attention with a snappy Motown groove underneath airy vocals, but they also rebrand the aggressive, gritty world of garage rock with a more endearing subtlety that doesn't really care whether it sounds cool or even what you might think of it. In a bleak, endless desert of artists trying to do the same thing ten thousand different ways, Younger Me is a refreshing and apparently unaffected oasis. Sincerity counts. The album flows lush and quiet, with occasional bold moments but still never managing to allude too heavily to its underlying messages of optimism and hope. If this is the future of pop, it might be worth investigating further.
