The dream pop duo Wilson & Joy released an LP entitled Love Is Happening back in June and it has some of the catchiest unheard nuggets the genre has to offer. Twelve songs deep the album takes a bit of patience but is well worth the effort. You won't regret it. The album begins with a well-rounded gem called “For A Moment.” It’s a warm song that creates a relaxing atmosphere while maintaining infectious vocal melodies, which are the focal point. “L.I.H.” is a filler or a transition depending how you look at it that combines robot sounding voices that say “what is happening” with a strong bright synth and other sounds that might mimic the internal sounds of a computer. The piece transitions into “To The End Of The World” which we mentioned in our review last week of their EP. The song is still one of their best songs and seems to be “single” type material. I love the sound of the deep organ and that’s what they start out with on “Vampire.” I’m pretty sure I would have been happy listening to the tone of the organ for the entire song but I have to admit the vocal work added to the rather melancholy atmosphere that turns nostalgic was quite ok with me. One of the shortest but catchiest songs on the album is “Brighter” which lacks substantial percussion. The song creates some pretty cool guitar tones that sound dark and a bit reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine. The band actual plays a little trick here in that the next song is called “Even Brighter.” While they could have easily made this just one track, it works this way too. The song sounds a bit churchlike not unlike something you would hear off a Spiritualized record. The album ends with an interesting 15-minute song entitled “January’s End.” Starting minimally with piano and voice, the song adds layers such as strings, guitars and vocal harmonies but perhaps the oddest thing about the song is the gap of silence smack dab in the middle of it. While I get it, it still tested my patience because it lasted about 3 minutes or so (30 seconds would have been fine). The music does end on a high note and it had a cathartic vibe to it. Overall this a good album that does justice to the shoegaze genre. While not perfect that created an album that those who appreciate the scene will embrace.
