Be prepared for anything when you press play on Wardens’ debut EP This Town; this is a band that clearly had no reservations borrowing from their own personal influences to make one very unique band sound. The opening song “Chronic” has a sort of 80’s heavy metal riff going on. It works especially well underneath the punk-inspired vocals. I laughed at the drug name drops, not because I thought it was silly or funny, but because I thought that made the song even more awesome (I refuse to admit knowing what they likely meant by the title of that song, but I will say I appreciate the reference). The vocals in “Middle Ground” perfectly match the title. The song feels a big spacey at times, which actually works quite well for the song. It’s surprisingly full of energy; the lyrics fully support the idea of the title but it is incredibly upbeat for what I expected. I really like the bass in “This Town,” and I also liked how the vocals followed the guitars (or was it the other way around?). It had an incredibly classic pop sound with some disco flair, and reminded me of something I would hear in a roller rink or some place of that nature. This EP is described as a broad definition of the band’s sound, and I have to say that if this shows the band’s range then we have a lot to look forward to from Wardens. This sounded to me like a huge sampling of all the best parts of many different genres, much like mixing the best features of chocolate bars into one mega-ultra chocolate bar. I look forward to hearing a full-length from this band and seeing where their sound leads them!
