The EP One by The Wondersmiths may only be a little over ten minutes but man do they pack in a lot of good content. There is a lot to enjoy about this band from the original sounding lead vocals to the rock/dance style and the utter unpretentious nature of the band that make the songs an absolute pleasure to listen to.
The group is essentially a rock band but their songs have the energy of a dance song. There is an unbridled optimistic energy that surges through the music that is hard to deny. Even the most jaded of human beings could listen to this music and perk a smile. “Public Admiration” initially starts with a kick drum and fuzzed bass whichs sound a bit like “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes but transforms into something completely different. Once the vocals kick in you are going to get why these guys have irresistible charm. The vocalist packs in so many words during the verse it’s almost like he is rapping but he is totally not. The chorus contains more traditional singing and pops with exuberance. It’s comparable to something you might hear from Passion Pit. Next up is “I Know You Better,” which is another exceptional song that revolves around no more than a guitar, bass, drums and vocals. The chorus is horribly addictive as he sings, “Cause you're always happy, happy happy when there should be nothing, nothing, nothing for you to live for.” The lyrics came off humorous to me and I couldn't help but grin when I heard them. They close with “Insignificant,” which is arguably the highlight of the three. Once the verse hits the guitars drop out and it's only a thick, danceable bass line, and drums that support the wicked vocals. The guitar enters with a slick funky riff. There should be a warning that you may be humming the melodies later throughout the week. It was an all around great track that is still stuck in my head. All I can say is that I listened to some of their other EP’s on Spotify to get my fix and I eagerly await a full-length.
