Right from the get-go, the sound emitted by The Voxes on their latest self-titled EP The Voxes captures your attention and gently sweeps you away to a super mellow place, perhaps a landscape decorated with palm trees. Maybe the band’s sound can be attributed to their hometown of California which some say is the birthplace of this kind of alternative surfesque indie rock. Overall their sound is very upbeat and has a light happy air to it, making this band’s music very pleasing to listen to.

The opening track on the EP titled “It’s Chromatic” has a very fast-paced vibe and it carries on in a catchy manner. “I’m so ecstatic, it’s chromatic, let me taste your cherry chapstick.” The song is really fun to listen to and makes you want to run around with your friends or a lover.

The track titled “Indigo” has an interesting vibe; it is very mellow yet carries a multitude of musical depths that really make this track one for many occasions, both happy and sad. It describes a depressive state induced by love, but incorporates the optimism of overcoming.

“Vespa” begins with an edgy guitar riff that has a sweet melody to it. This track really reminds me of beach-surf rock. Even the style of the vocals fits into this genre, it reminds me of bands like The Drums and Pure X. The lyrics describe a love scenario and there is passion within the vocalists demeanor; “give me a chance, my love will never pass.” The guitars ramp up the chorus and make the song just drip away into the sunset.

The band really has a solid sound that can compete with other bands in the genre but unfortunately this EP suffers from mediocre recording. Sometimes the sounds of the separate instruments and vocals get a bit muddled. This is completely understandable for an emerging band on a strict budget. Luckily, the sound still comes through and The Voxes gives us a collection of songs that can be listened to by almost anyone, anywhere.
