The Revox are a Swiss band that has playing since 2011 and recently released an album entitled Lazy Sunshine. This album is an immediate visceral punk rock album that will sit nicely alongside The Sonics, MC5, New York Dolls and The Stooges. The first thing I noticed it that they achieved that same sound you hear from those old punk rock and garage rock records from the ‘60s. It’s live, distorted and has this energy like a revolution is imminent. It’s that liberating sound that feels like a youthful culture is rising up and something is happening.

There is no doubt a resurgence in bands emulating some of the pioneers from the ‘60s. Bands such as Foxygen and Ty Segall Band have become relatively well known indie acts that embrace the sounds from the past while at the same time create music that doesn't feel contrived. The Revox are in the same niche. Their songs are obviously influenced from previous generations but it never feels like a gimmick. The songs come from a real place and it comes across in the music. 

The Revox deliver ten solid songs on Lazy Sunshine that all have a similar type of energy. Some may accuse them of sticking to the same formula but when you think it about it doesn't make much sense that they would venture into other territory. You don't want to hear a disco song or hear them get experimental. You want to the hear the crunch of a guitar or the slight off drum beat but most importantly that energy that lets you let loose so you can imagine you are as hip as Iggy Pop.

Amongst the ten songs there are a couple which stood out to me. “I’m Free” is a fun song that features nasally vocals that proclaim “I’m free” while “Jumpin’ Around” sounds more like a song you would hear from the Beatles towards the beginning of their career. Think “Twist and Shout.”

Overall, the album is a good time. It’s a blast to listen to and also brings about some nostalgia.
