The Holy Alimonies, a Chicago based band, only recently began gigging, but have opened for such groups as Centro-Matic and Polkaholics at local venues and bars. The band consists of Scott Lee, W.C Mallard, Kevin Hyde and William Simons (who wrote many of their current tracks). Later this year, The Holy Alimonies will record a full-length album. In January, they released their second EP, Blessèd Shit & Happy New Year. 

Their Blessèd Shit & Happy New Year EP tosses an eclectic array of rock and punk sounds, with some hints of grunge and folk tones. The album consists of six tracks with their own unique style and substance. Every track contains something fascinating, whether lyrically, instrumentally, or vocally, but three songs really shine above the rest. “Use Your Imaginization” just creates a charismatic dynamic between the lyrics and the beats. The vocal styling mimics that of a British punk-rock artist of the 80’s music scene.

 Additionally, “Use Your Imaginization” recites some of the cleverest lyrics. A person cannot go wrong with lyrics like, “stoner on anti-depressants.” The arrangement of the instruments and the vocal choices on “Growin’ Old” gives it a somber ease that matches the subject. However, the song toys with the double meaning of the phrase, “Growin’ Old,” because the song could be discussing the actual aging process, or growing tired of something or someone. The track ends by fading out after the leading vocals grow into a near whisper, which echoes the idea of fading away. “Sleepy Chicago” stands as homage to the band’s journey, with lyrics highlighting their possible past gory and glory stories.

The Holy Alimonies instantly creates a bond with all its Chicago listeners by referencing the city throughout the EP. Their high-energy album performances show how The Holy Alimonies’ clear passion and drive for musical success will ensure just that: success. Blessèd Shit & Happy New Year creates all the thrills of a live performance, but in a recorded package. It’s a not-to-be missed experience.
