Get ready for a postmodern take on classical folk rock. The Hillary Reynolds Band is a five-piece folk band from Massachusetts and represents a beautiful blending of musicians that hail from all over the country who coalesced at Berklee College of Music and since then, they have been churning out the wildly unique folk-inspired tracks. The band is based out of Boston and has garnered quite a following since their young college days. They have grown to share the stage with big names like Norah Jones and have produced several well-received music videos for their songs. The opening track on their album The Miles Before Us titled “Took Me A While” lets us dive right into the world that is represented by Hillary Reynolds Band. The song inconspicuously starts before a rush of pure Americana sound embodied by percussion and guitars. Soon Reynolds’ sweet, bright and deep voice awakens us with inspiring lyrics about love; “Took me a while to say yes or no baby, oh so slow, but now we’re here, its been a while since then and now… it feels so right baby.” The song is very layered and you can feel the amount of instruments being used within the song. In this track, the piano really has an anchoring effect and adds that touch of love and romance to the song. “I Surrender” is yet another beautiful song with an uplifting glow that is quite hard to avoid acquiring while listening. The opening of the song begins with Reynolds’ voice proclaiming “I surrender, to my heart, lay down these weapons, bear my scars,” which really sets the scene. Then adding, “can’t stop now I’ve come this far,” prefaces the banjo which is set lose with passion and energy. It is a beautifully catchy song and the harmonization from guest appearance Forrest O’ Connor adds yet another great layer. The guitars and banjo really make up the backbone of this song. The Miles Before Us is a gorgeous collection of songs each with their very own story to tell that anyone can relate to. Anyone interested in folk or pop Americana music will thoroughly enjoy the songs within this release from Hillary Reynolds Band. The sound is high quality and every song has a perfect sing-along quality that makes listening to this album again and again a breeze.
