the gallop - the gallop
The Gallop started with two friends. Over the span of five years, it evolved into a five-piece indie-rock band, which consists of three guitars, a bass, drums and vocals. Their first self-titled EP The Gallop represents the opposing forces of content and sound. Most of The Gallop’s four tracks contain head-bopping, toe-tapping, upbeat rhythms. However, the lyrics showcase stories that should live in the gloomy melody realm. The Gallop’s songs are about broken relationships, false lovers, addiction and bitterness.
The Gallop EP consists of the tracks “Business,” “Cold Shoulders,” “Illusions” and “Smoke.” “Business” discusses the outcome of declaring emotional distance from a past relationship. The playful instrumental battle nature gives it a country-rock style. The dreamy beats of “Cold Shoulders” matches the song’s message of complete bewilderment with someone’s true identity.
“Illusions” exemplifies the tone behind The Gallop: it’s a song about an imploding romance in an overall cheery musical style. “Smoke” offers the most ambiguity with its lyrics. Smoke in the song alludes to the saying “blowing smoke,” smoke in relation to confusion, and actual smoke from cigarettes or such. Its lyrics and beats make it one of the most expertly constructed tracks on The Gallop.
The Gallop created an album that feels effortless. There is an ease to their beats, lyrics and sound, which surely came from lots of practicing, experimenting and production. This makes the album all the more commendable. The Gallop challenges, reflects and ponders on things that haunt us; it’s a dose of pain with a shot of perkiness.
