Battle Of The Heart
self-released; 2013

3.8 out of 5

By Eva Cantillo

Battle of the Heart is an altruistic compilation that is an all out thrust of truthful and triumphant music. The band, The Brevet, is comprised of an eccentric mix of musicians who produced the entire album in their mobile home park right outside of Orange County, CA. In their album Battle of the Heart you can hear the grit and truth that the members put forth, as they claim they’re not about fame or fortune, just in it for the pure love of music and craft.

The opening song "Start to Begin" really lets the listener know these artists are about their music; the song is catchy and triumphant. The song has an overall mellow feel yet the upbeat chords and catchy background vocals make this somewhat southern song a real toe-tapper. A track with the same title as the album is a beautiful song carried by almost an opera-like orchestra of sound as the vocalist shouts, “let these eyes be open.” This song is definitely a pick-me-up.

Another song that really pulls the listener right in is “Rocks Beneath the Water.” The vocalist uses a successful harmonization by reaching both high and low notes that paint a bright and blazing musical sunrise for the listener to lose themselves in. The concepts behind most of the songs are sometimes somber but always have that moral to remind you to keep your head up, way up.  The track “Fuel and Fire” talks about possessing the strength to carry on, the lyrics “the burdens keep weighing on our souls.” illustrates trials and tribulations that most can relate to.

There are many different effects and musical instruments that are heard throughout the album which gives it a nice listening texture. The vocalist has a very dynamic voice that manages to kind of float across every beat of the song; it can really help the listener transcend to wherever the beats of the song are going. There is an organic dynamic behind the members of the band and you can hear this truth in their music. They are pure musicians making pure music.
