On the Bandcamp page for Southerner it describes the band as a singer/songwriter-based band with post-rock influences. This is a really the most accurate way to describe the band. Imagine combining Bon Iver style folk with Sigur Rós and you should get a decent idea of their sound. The band is definitely unique in how they combine styles such as folk and post-rock but what is more impressive is it doesn’t sound contrived or forced. On their EP entitled A Song for Old Songs they showcase three songs, which demonstrate their talent.
They open with “A Song for Old Songs,” which starts with a lone acoustic guitar and an attractive warm, melancholy performance by Austin Lord. Lord has poignant lyrics that embrace universal truths. He sings “Oh, the stories / The stories that you told / Of being young / And slowly getting old / It makes you afraid, / But it happens every day.” As the song progresses the whole band joins in and what unfolds is a ratherexceptional song. It isn’t until the last two minutes that their post-rock tendencies start to form. The guitars crackle as the drums and bass repeatedly build to a climax. The transition to this part of the song is seamless, organic and makes complete sense. “Kingdom Come” creates a spacious atmosphere with feedback from a guitar, synths and even the drums, which have a decent amount of reverb on them. As with the first song the explosive more intense climax come towards the end of the song. They close with “Write The Rest,” which combines a rolling drum beat with a folky-sounding guitar riff as a lead electric guitar provides the atmosphere. The chorus is the most memorable on the EP as Lord sings “I am torn between what was and what might be / Like a page that has been ripped from a beautiful story / In my mind I always try to write the rest.” Southerner is onto something here. A Song for Old Songs is an impressive artistic statement and left me hungry for a full-length album.
