Solace is a guitar duo who met in high school and have been creating their own original, instrumental works. They recently released a two-song EP entitled Occlusion...Clarity, which while not genre-defining contains some nice melodies and showcases their ability to play off of each other. Done in a single weekend, they recorded a couple of improvised jams and then mastered it in the same night. The music is very rough and each song is a first take and contains little mistakes, which make it feel live and as if this two are playing right in front of you.
The first song called “Occlusion” is a slow song that relies on sparse guitar work as a consistent pattern is picked on one guitar and the other noodles around with various lead work. The song isn’t bad but it isn’t as good as “Clarity” which is a song that contains rhythmability and natural dynamics. The melodies are catchy and the lead work was done well. This EP is a good start for Solace to continue playing and working together and see what else is possible as they hone their craft.
