Smoke No.7
self-released; 2013

3.4 out of 5

By Andrea Abi-Karam
Three rambunctious Chicago musicians got together to form Smoke No. 7. After a long 10 hour night of smoking probably more than seven cigarettes and drinking whiskey, they recorded their self-titled three track EP. They recorded at Fullerton Recording Studios in Chicago.

Smoke No. 7 aims for a dirty rock n roll sound, but they end up with a more whiney southern rock tone. The bass intro to Succubus promises funk at first but turns into a more Lynryd Skynrd and The Allman Brothers type of sound. The first guitar solo climbs and climbs for a building into the subject of the singer being seduced and strangled. The second guitar solo screams on the higher register, mimicking the effect of the singer being strangled.

Track 2 sets off with a nice picking guitar intro before slow, raspy vocals kick in. “as lonely as I am after this basement.” Their instrumental skill is obviously strong, but the vocals and lyrics bring down the EP’s potential with immature songwriting and cacophonous vocals. The repetition of “higher” would be better suited for a high school stoner punk band than a classically trained hard rock band.

“Assassin” begins with a quiet, classic guitar intro that roughly transitions to a heavy metal rhythm. Although the song is called “Assassin” the lyrics “you fuck the world with your innocence / you play angel when it is convenient” sound more like slut-shaming than a noir murder mystery world. In conjunction with the repeated “I will hunt you down” chorus, and the ego guitar at the end, the song is a creepy display of male power.

Smoke No.7 is a solid EP that has some impressive moments but also may benefit from refining their sound.

If you give a full length review of something and close it with the improper usage of the word "their", please at least include a disclaimer at the top warning people. I'll give you a free spinet you can copy/paste at a later date at the top of your valueless reviews.

"Hi, I am Andrea, I'm a feminist who doesn't quite have a grip on the English language, but if you have any male under tones in your music I will squash you with my poor grammar and estrogen saturated thought processes that are so cringe worthy I sometimes turn straight men homosexual."

In all seriousness, I know these guys in the band and they are going to be really successful. To their credit or perhaps their optimism, they posted on a web-site that clearly is biased towards a particular sound. Your review immediately discredits itself when you get the quantity of band members wrong as well as the lyrics. Your opening line about smoking 7 cigarettes was a quick showing that you already had your mind made up from cover art. I don’t smoke cigarettes but I crave one now because my God, I am borderline depressed after reading a review like yours and realizing that someone can be so half ass at their profession, a profession that is based on judging others pursuit of theirs. If I find you on Tinder Andrea, you’re getting chucked to the right. Please “don’t hunt me down”.

Don't be. It's enjoying the time in your girls digital throat. Someone had to silence her, and there is no better penis than mine. Thanks for inquiring though Freddie, I appreciate you reaching out.
