After being inspired by seeing Daft Punk live in 2007 (I'm jealous because I didn’t), Oscar J. Narro aka Rekord got inspired to do some DJing and become a producer. After a little bit of settling in he decided he wanted to trudge forward and start to craft songs that were seeded in techno. He recently released two efforts. His first EP is entitled Tesla which he explains is  “a brooding soundscape of broken 808‘s and synths run through noise generators and Moog and Curtis filters.”  Movement, which was only released a month later, has a much more conventional techno sound with 909’s and stabbing synths.

Both of these EP’s are dark - almost industrial; think Burial if he focused more on techno than dubstep. Turns out he made a good decision deciding to produce because there are some impressive songs here that fans of dark techno should eat up. 

On Tesla we have songs that sprawl and unravel like the opener “Arc.” The song isn't a thumper but instead lays an ominous blanket of synths that mask the subtle percussion. “Wardenclyffe” is similar in nature as swarms of killer bees attack and the end of the song brings in elements of jungle and glitch. The most busy and percussive song is “Nervous” which creates some dark energy for the ghouls to dance to. “Motor” shifts and morphs sometimes introducing neo futuristic cityscapes that fuse tribal drums and primal surges.

Movement feels much different. The first song called “Movement” has a lot more of a classic techno feel at times that gets dissected. Clouds of white noise populate the frequency spectrum as a classic steady kick creates a backbone for it to lie upon. The song transforms numerous times within its five-plus minutes and shows us a new side to Rekord. An industrial playground is turned on in “Prey” as heavy percussive elements take center stage. The album ends with you feeling like you're alone in a huge futuristic factory that is assembling A.I. and the machines are powering down.

Rekord has created two EP’s that are unique, creative and form the perfect balance between techno and experimental. They are exceptional, dark affairs that I have become a fan of.
