Proper Folk is a synthy, percussive dream pop band from Lombard, IL. Keith Dunn and Will Maimonis founded the group out of the ashes of their last group, Kudu Fang. Their first release “Creepy Noises" is according to the band “a portrait of a year’s worth of movement.” After listening to the album I felt this was a worthy testament to their sound. I got the sense that they were trying movement and often times nostalgia of certain times, places and even sequences of events. That being said the album is upbeat and full of dance elements that explode at times similar to a band like Passion Pit.

The album kicks off with “Kids of the Sun” which is a great pop song with excellent production and killer vocal melodies. My favorite part was around 1:40 where the band just breaks things down with jangly crisp guitars and gurgly synths. One of my highlights is “Touch.” It is a catchy pop dance number that contains cascading guitars and synths that create a whirlwind of sound. The vocals are especially infectious on this song and are upfront in the mix. My favorite song on the album was “Harvest Moon” which has some fantastic drum work but also has an emotional center that wasn’t as apparent to me on some of the other songs. This band does a great job combining dance, pop and experimentation on their debut album. Check it out.
