No Name Jack is a four-piece from Raleigh, North Carolina consisting of Eliza Gates (vocals), Murali Bashyam (guitar, keyboards), Jack Hughes (bass, guitar) and Rob Spiro (drums). They recently released an eclectic ten-song album entitled America. Stylistically the band explores a bit of funk, punk rock and other places in between. The album starts off with “America,” which is perhaps the most patriotic song I have heard this side of that song from Team America (America, Fuck Yeah). I couldn't help but laugh at times while rocking alongside to the enlightening rock song. Eliza Gates sing lines “welcome to your freedom welcome to your home” and “don't call me over emotional I think you’re under emotional, I won’t just close my eyes and pray, this is America.” So the band introduces some funk with their second song entitled “Bits and Pieces.” Gates plays the part of the temptress as she deliver the line ”I am more than you can handle.” The guitars are clean as the bass bounces around a number of notes. “Bitter Stare” combines three-chord style punk rock while “Thin Skin” is a straightforward but well written rock song. They close with the most accomplished song and also the longest song on the album called “One More Day Thing.” It doesn't rock as hard as some of the other songs but is the most pop oriented. Perhaps the most unusual aspect is that it fades out at about the four-minute mark to utter silence. Overall, this album is hit and miss. There are some moments where the band’s talent come together and it is quite enjoyable.
