With a background as a piano player since the tender age of five, and a series of experiences within rock and metal during his teenage years, Australian musician James Opie started taking his music to the next level forming his own solo project, Nihilore, an outlet that is designed to give him absolute creative freedom to experiment with prog, rock and electronica, as well as many other genres and compositional styles. His album The Age of Wonder stems from Opie's recent studies at the Australian Institute of Music as a composer. Very influenced by video games and film scores, this record features epic orchestral compositions alternating chill and minimal electronics. Generally keeping a very open mind, Opie is able to create tracks that could fit on a timeless movie soundtrack. From powerful drums to dramatic strings and edgy electronics, I would say that Nihilore has clearly succeeded in his intent.

The first track "Saudade" has a rich variety of instruments and has some very cool sounding drums that bring a lot of energy to the track. "Toska" starts with a rather simple yet beautiful piano melody that is quickly compromised by the industrial type beats and persian melodies. Each one of the six compositions featured on The Age Of Wonder could be a perfect complement to a movie or a videogame soundtrack, although the songs are powerful and accomplished enough to stand on their own, without necessarily feeling the need of visuals to go with them.
