Gata Galáctica

self-released; 2014

3.9 out of 5

By Eva Cantillo

Nester brings us Gata Galáctica, a rock album that just makes you melt away. The five-member band brings their listeners super smooth composure that’s paired with deep guitar and percussion instrumentals. At times the depth of the each song entraps you, and then before you know it the light and sensual airiness comes in to save you. While listening you will notice that it is hard to put a finger on the style or genre. This may be because of the diverse makeup of the band members and each having their own musical appeal. From listening, I envision a musical quilt made up of patches from bands like Minus the Bear, Fleet Foxes, Radiohead and The Black Keys.

Each song on the album literally uproots you and gently flings you out into mystical space and time. A track entitled “ I Am Juggernaut” does precisely this, there is calm water throughout the bridge then the song takes a turn and morphs into a wild rapid ride as deep and almost eerie guitar chords and drum patterns anchor the song.  The vocalist maintains a sweet and melodic “ooo, ooo, ooo,” throughout the instrumental breakdown and gives it that extra ethereal edge. The lyrics are just as striking; “Your pins placed on my maps, from the mountains to the seas. Just turn it all to diamonds.”

Another compelling song, “The Alchemist” starts off righteously with strong lyrics and equally vibrant instrumental patterns. “Golden. Philosophy. I Heard voices. Make it. I want it. Take it. I need it,” the rapid pace of the guitar and drums really helps you fall into the song and turn the world off.

Gata Galáctica seems to exude an ongoing theme, drawing from illusions of sailing away and “beautiful pastures with lots of green;” most of the lyrics are gilded with metaphors influenced by Mother Nature, giving the album that homey and super comfortable air. Listening to the album you can gather how authentic the recording process is, it seems like the music is being played live right before you. Overall, the album is a great listen and really an embodiment of successful music production and creation.
