Mindwaves is a rightly-named psych-experimental rock band from Canada who recently released and an album entitled Horizons. Their sound is sophisticated and layered and has many connotations of past, present, and future. It can be compared to something akin to Radiohead mixed with David Bowie and Pink Floyd. Each song has a fingerprint that it softly presses upon your third eye and results in an ethereal listening experience. The opening track on the album titled “Colours of the Night,” has an immensely wavy vibe to it that can only be consumed with a raw and open mind. The intriguing sound of the main vocalist makes embarking on this dark and misty journey even easier; he kind of acts as the confident and all-knowing tour guide leading you into the “Colours of the Night.” Toward the end of the seven-minute song, the sound seems to go deeper and deeper into the night which is characterized by a dramatic piano melody that seems to put you into a trance before it suddenly and softly fades away. “Insanity is Exile” was released as the single for Horizons and begins with an upbeat keyboard melody. Soon we realize the song is anchored by very distinct and telling lyrics; “I want to cross the universe and realize something’s out of place, it’s you.” The lyrics are then followed by a beautiful upbeat rhythm and then more of the love story is revealed; “I’m no leaving you for another girl, I’m leaving you for another world… You’ve been scared sane… insanity is exile.” As the song goes on, you realize how many concepts this song seems to speak about making it one worth listening to multiple times. Horizons is a beautifully intricate album that is decorated with intriguing lyrics, colorful instrumental breakdowns and pretty musical patterns and melodies that are both uplifting and shadily mysterious. Soundquality on the album is of high quality and this album gives the listener the prefect chance to escape to a place that lies just beyond the horizon. Become A Fan
