Packing For The Moon
self-released; 2013

3.7 out of 5

By Jamie Funk

Micheal Moon started his career out as a songwriter and producer who later became inspired as a recording artist and he recently released his second album entitled Packing For The Moon. Moon packs in fifteen songs that have intelligent lyrics, with original, often inventive, beats with a number of guests, which keep the album feeling fresh throughout its entirety. The style of each song is often defined from the guests that Moon collaborates with. It’s a very varied album but Moon’s production manages to make songs sound cohesive more often than not. He incorporates everything from synths, sub sonic kick drums, samples and more into his songs.

The album starts with a quick sample of John F. Kennedy appropriately entitled “JFK Intro” before seguing into one of the strongest tracks called “Super Nova (Feat. Poe Picasso).” There seems to be is a tinge of Kanye West  influence on the track, which is evident on the chorus. Moon sings, “I'm a Super Nova... (I'm a star... I shine so bright... you watch me, you might lose your sight...) I'm a Super Nova... (Brooklyn streets mold me up and this beat about to blow me up...).” The song combines kinetic beat, with bright synths and a bumping low end. This is a track that needs to be played loud and at the club.

Get ready to break out the candles, incense and lava lamps when listening to chill vibes of “Beautiful (Feat. JonnyGo Figure).” The song reminded me of early LL Cool J in a good way. It is a song for getting in the mood with that special someone.

“R.A.N (Feat. C0y0 & Poe Picasso)” combines DMX style chants with fast spitting rhymes that will bring out your inner thug. The beat is solid and brings in original sounding samples and sounds that work with the style of flow. “DUBAI (Feat. C0Y0 & Keyzz)” has a Persian vibe that talks about what money can get you in today’s world. Moon raps “So it's suit and tie, no wedding ring Gold brace, gold watch guess I'm Trinidad everything .”

Packing For The Moon is a well-produced album that has a diverse combination of songs that make for some compelling hip-hop.
