On the Edge is the debut album from Masters of the Interstate that is composed of Isak Wilson (lead vocals), Daniel Spiller (drums) and Tyler Beaston (keyboards). It’s an 11-song album that goes for grandiose songs in a very similar way that Coldplay tries to pull off. Its A DIY effort – all recorded, mixed and mastered by the lead singer – which is admirable but unfortunately the production falls short trying to tackle such a big sound. Wilson has a pleasant voice although it is occasionally out of tune and sometimes he tries to reach notes that his vocal chords don't agree with. The band has some talent whether it’s the technically proficient piano work or the guitar playing. As far as the songs go there are highs and lows within the album. In addition to the peaks and valleys there are some endearing moments, which is the biggest strength of the band. The songs are emotionally heavy and sometimes overwhelming. The band doesn't deviate from that nostalgic melancholy. “Fall” is one of the highlights of the album and revolves around an arpeggiating piano melody, distorted guitar and drums. It is one of the songs that successfully blend melancholy and triumph into a cathartic crescendo. “Silhouettes” starts off soft and intimate with guitar and vocals. Drums enter and eventually the band is rocking out together in grand fashion. “I’m So Sorry” is a solid song that holds a good pace while “Fateful Goodbye” is arguably the best song on the album. On The Edge is a mixed album that could have been a bit more impactful if the engineering was improved. For a debut album it has its moments. Check it out for yourself and see if this is your bag of tricks.
