With its second release The Last Broadcast, Little Dipper are these independent rockers that aim to intrigue the masses with just the right mix of Thursday and Rage Against The Machine. That’s some unusual comparisons, but hear for yourself. The Last Broadcast is raw, hard-hitting and original, or just strange if you prefer. This quartet has been riding the NY/NJ scene for nearly ten years and swing around catchy riffs and creative guitar work like a weapon. Their sound has transformed over the years from mid ‘90s alternative to vintage-dipped hard rock albeit still slightly emotive like the turn of the century punk poet. With the band's experience and long-winded influence, their sense of variety should come as no surprise. The Last Broadcast is completely Little Dipper’s baby, no outside help or contribution. Michael Nagy and Tony Kropasky, founders of Three Rabbits Productions and Fish On Fire Recordings respectively, honed their skills in the recording booth to push out the best album they could. The result is a collection of songs produced true to life. By that I mean, it sounds more live than most of the records I’ve experienced. The Last Broadcast's organic sound and approach are evident on guitar riffs within "Change Starts Today" and "Allies,” but there is some high ceiling sound on "The Abyss" and the infectious "Do It Again.” “Drifting” has some great movement and feels timeless, something about the way the toms act like distant thunder while the guitars explore registers in harmonic exchange. The vocals are contemplative and existential, always good for some introspection and free for unique interpretation. The bass and rhythm establish themselves and this track really settles in for the ride. If there was a single, this might be the one although it is pretty chill for the first few moments. I suppose that would depend on the market and where this was headed. This album takes a bold move for the ballad and rocker, which is something to really appreciate.
