It's Not Always About You
self-released; 2013

4.1 out of 5

By Eva Cantillo
Ambient tones and waves is what make up It’s Not Always About You by Jump Look Drop. It is dripping with passion and love, in both positive and negative ways. Yet all the songs are shrouded in a veil of honest and pure musical creativity and it all glitters in ethereal creation.

The first track “Tokyo,” starts off very smoothed out and chill, but as time passes, the beat and tension begins to build and the chorus turns into an epic ballad. There is deep percussions and a few ethereal synths and effects “I won’t let you go, when my ship comes in, going to Tokyo, and start again…” the song ends with an intense electrified beat that is strong, and is then accentuated by epic lyrics that build until the song dissipates.

The song “She Chose You” is a super syrupy love song that is really detailed in regards to how one feels in a deep love relationship. Another song “I’ve Seen You Naked” is an ode to the literal and metaphorical nakedness between two lovers. The lyrics "now all we can say is hello… remember us like when we were then, now we’re two distant friends.." The vocalist goes on to remind his old love “I’ve seen you naked… you’ve promised you’d never let me go, I’ve seen you broken…” The song really draws you into this intimate situation in which anyone can innately relate to. The sound of the artist’s voice on this track mirrors that of the feeling it is describing, it is longing yet loving and saddened yet slightly glimmering with modest optimism. The next song may be just as hypnotic “you brought me to life” are the anchoring lyrics of the song “My First Breath.” The track is structured by a gentle spring that is slowly releasing pulsating bubbles of psychedelic synth beats. As the track goes on, the song becomes more passionate in regards to the newfound love, “breathe in breathe out your love.”

The sounds of the album feel like they came right out of the late nineties yet have a sensation of contemporary music from bands like Radiohead and Air. It is not a collection of songs for a party or gathering but more of beautiful background music to lose yourself in for a while. It’s Not Always About You is a keeper as it is well produced and has been created by a passionate person.
