Pop Rock Overflow
self-released; 2013

3.5 out of 5

By Eva Cantillo

Artist Jonathan Friedman is the epitome of new-age pop music; the music is literally dripping with pop soul. Friedman is a one-man production and Pop Rock Overflow is his latest release that took about six years to produce. Friedman has written and produced all of the tracks on the album and the revolving theme is based on love, lust and loss. The entire collection of music seems like it was catapulted right out of the eighties into the latest style of pop music. It’s a pleasing combination of past and present pop.

Some of the tracks on the album could be ripped right off an 80’s prom mix; I can easily imagine a room full of couples fully dressed in eighties attire and dancing to the song “Crazy Beautiful.” The lyrics are very romantic and really emulate the beauty and craziness within a relationship: “everywhere I will be there, you hold me close in your wide open heart.” In the song there is a progressive build of percussion and a soft tinging of a triangle.

A song with a more upbeat vibe is “Live or Memorex.” It has an anthem-like feel and encompasses more of an electronic aura. There is also more influence from the electric guitar, which has a bit of an outdated style that really gives the song that vintage pop feel. The lyrics “break free from the way it used to be… living life in retrospect” illustrate an environment of rebellion and a new-age consciousness. This could definitely be a party song. The song “Everyone Knows You’re a Star” is a simplistic song with hypnotic vibrations and some really out-there electronic effects. The repetition of the lyrics “everyone knows you’re a star” really makes this a romantic and loving song that anyone could dedicate to their lover.

The way Friedman sings the lyrics of the song is one of the most striking ways this music can be recognized. The style is very dramatic and varying in tone and pitch, it conforms very closely to the pop music of the late eighties and early nineties. The quality of sound on the album is produced very well and you can tell much time was put into every aspect of the recordings. This is a great album for anyone who loves pop music and anyone who would like to travel back in time through music.
