The band Idiot Son doesn't waste much time. Each song on their recent EP entitled room is all done and over in under two minutes. If you get down to it the three-piece from Brooklyn is a punk band. You can trace some of their sounds to Devo, Sex Pistols and even The Buzzcocks. The production is a DIY style and sounds decent at points but could have used some improvements when they turn the distortion on.
First up is “AMPOP” which revolves a steady drum beat, poppy bass line and jangly guitars. The vocalist sounds a bit like Ian Curtis and when the bridge hits the power chords they descend for a measure before seguing back into the verse. It is short and to the point but there is not much meat. “Eating Is Versatile” is made up of a couple of power chords and inconsistent cathartic screaming/wailing. It is a dirty little punk song that isn't too shabby. I enjoyed the tricky rhythms and it might have been the most enjoyable tune on the EP. “That Ghost” is a character ditty that channels the ghosts of Joy Division and late 170’s punk. “Piss Fumes” revolves around a circular, cascading melody as the vocalist talks instead of sings. Don’t ask me what he was saying because the lyrics were not discernible. The EP ends with 58 seconds of gritty guitars, bass and drums entitled “XS.” The songs on this EP are like skeletons. They seem like ideas that never got fully explored and filled out. The band has a good foundation. Now they just need to write a couple of songs you can bite into.
