Not many people can say their Craigslist hookup turned into a successful union. However, members of the band Hello Companion can. Hello Companion consists of the Craigslist connection and three lifelong friends. Now Andrew Church, David Mitchell, Sean Campbell and Pat Nicholson reside in Toronto, ON, Canada, where they try to realistically reach levels of fame. Hello Companion’s Here, in this mixes rock, alternative, and a little Britpop, to make an album more empathic to human struggles than many other rock ones. A lot of the songs address people searching for their own life meaning and identity. These tracks call upon you to channel your specialness, and then to fight for it. The Here, in this tells listeners to live in the here and now. Stylistically the Here, in this album relies heavily on guitar and drums for the background beats. Half of the songs sound 70s rock inspired like “In The Night” and “Flexibility,” while “Break The Piece” and “Tetherball” sound very 80s rock, with some 90s grunge growls. “In The Night” and “Flexibility” almost sound like pairs; they use strong vocals to emphasize the message of not giving into the idea of normality. “Break The Piece” and “Tetherball” could also be pairs because both songs reflect on past relationships. “In The Night” keeps its tone acoustic, but the introduction of the piano gives it a sound variety not heard on other tracks. It’s also the most marketable song on the EP. The tune with the most sound experimenting is “Here, In This.” Nevertheless, some of the song’s guitar tricks don’t work. They distract from the vocals. Here, in this contains some vibrant songs with strong universal messages. The album has a clear direction, which helps emphasize Hello Companion’s music maturity. They know their audience, and they know how to please them. If this EP is just a taste of what they have to come, then they’ll be pleasing their audience for years.
