Gravity Calls is an alternative rock band from Hudson County, New Jersey that formed in 2013 after vocalist and rhythm guitarist Josh Daniels moved from Texas and started recruiting members through the Internet. In his journey to find the right members he found Luis Alfonso (lead guitar), Christopher Mendez (bassist) and Alphie Aguilar (drummer). The band is still in their embryonic stage but has managed to release a four-song EP entitled Bound By Physics, which forms a decent foundation for the band. The songs on the EP are fairly straightforward “alternative” songs, which are well written and showcases individual and collective talent but the band may have a hard time cutting through in an over-saturated market of similar acts. I was looking for it but there was little I could latch on to at this point that gave the band a distinct flavor that they could call their own. Bound By Physics starts with a lively, energetic song entitled “Meteors Over Milton.” It starts with a build up of guitars and a rumbling snare before it explodes. Kudos to the bassist here who pulls off a creatively interesting bass line that adds dynamics to the song. Daniels’ voice is well suited for the music and delivers poetic lyrics. He sings, “Yeah I'll fly further, faster, farther Earth is distant, growing smaller And all before you is a sweet desire Close my eyes and walk through fire.” “Violence” revolves around the sustain of an electric guitar, a steady bass and a foundational drumbeat during the verse and also delivers a fairly catchy chorus. Daniels’ voice gets filtered later on in the voice to add some variation to the mix. “Had It Good” is a power ballad with an emotional core somewhere between 3 Doors Down and Jimmy Eat World. They close with the highlight “Phantom Command,” which is a seven-minute song that starts to explore the band’s potential. Gravity Calls may still have some work to do in regard to finding a signature sound but with Bound By Physics they seem to be off to a solid start.
