Artist Gonzalo Esteybar has quite an international reputation under his belt. Born in Rosario, Argentina, Esteybar’s music is centered on jazz-like ambient music with a Latin infusion. About is his latest album release and it represents a sophisticated and dramatic take on classical jazz. There is much attention paid to the guitar in this EP, as Esteybar has much public attribution to his talents with this instrument. All of the songs on this collection are acoustic tracks yet stray from being classified as simple and deconstructed. These songs are all very heavy with effects and full of sounds from various instruments. Yet, at the same time, the songs maintain an aura of lightness and they all have a very ethereal quality. The song titled “Paspartu” is a very interesting journey through sound, the song carries much energy and intrigue, yet is very mellow and the continuous strumming from the guitar really anchors the song and also provides a sanctuary for the mind. The sound in the song can be attributed to an Indian love drama, I can see this song as a backdrop for any Bollywood movie. “About,” a song, which the EP is named after, has a very sensuous and calming appeal. On the other hand, as the song progresses, a darker side begins to emerge where there is doubt and suspicion laden within the notes. There is also an overlay of some really spacey and trippy effects and vocal samples. Then the guitar begins to strum in an almost surf-acid-rock type style. This song is one that is somewhat difficult to put a finger on, yet very interesting to experience. Overall, About is a beautiful collection of songs that lets the mind wander and become one with its thoughts. The quality of the sound is very clear and the inclusion of so many effects and instruments really make this album a solid and pleasing listen.
