The band Glittermouse’s motto is “boredom is the enemy.” This is a topic that cries true as the music on this album titled It’s Always the End of the World is dripping with entertainment at every possible moment. The music is heavy with guitar and is stitched with epic vocals that both anchor and lead the songs. The songs are somewhat dancey, yet at the same time they have a bit of a hard-core rock style in them, as well as some shoegaze influences. It seems like this band really does not like boredom as they infuse many different sounds and genres into their songs.
The first track “Exit, Exit” is a very upbeat song that is lead by the malleable voice of the lead singer. It ranges through high and low notes in a very short period of time making the song somewhat hypnotic and very catchy. The song “I For One” has a bluesy-experimental rock feel. It reminds me of a fusion between The Beastie Boys and Sublime. “Porn Stars and Promises” starts off with a slower yet heavy guitar chord and then the song dives into a very dramatic vocal performance that is held by a creepy-ish and subtle beat. The beat then overflows into a syrupy chorus that soulfully sings “I think we’re in love.” This song reminds me of the sound produced by bands like the Deftones or even Kings of Leon. A song that just pulls you in from the beginning is “Clocks on the Sun;” the percussion from the beginning invites you to join the epic journey that's waiting. The song then jumps into lyrics that describe a situation of confusion and discontent, yet presents optimism and the process of overcoming, or escaping into “outer space” as the vocalist describes it. This song has a monolithic almost Nordic rock feel to it, something like Awolnation. The chorus has a deep swooping “Wooooaahhh” that harmonizes with the instrumentals. The band obviously explores many sounds and sentiments, yet they are all fun and interesting. The collective also touches on so many different sounds and styles that a listener could literally never get “bored.” Mission achieved Glittermouse, mission achieved….
