Generals is a new band from Norfolk, England who just released their first self-titled EP, Generals. The EP contains five songs and feels like more than a solid start for the band. They have an attractive sound that combines elements or punk, rock and dance. Drawing inspiration from bands like The Strokes, Sly and The Family Stone, Iceage and even Art Brut, they showcase their diversity amongst these five songs as well as their potential.

The album starts thing off on the right foot with “Sounds Like We’re Going to War.” It’s a dance song with guitars; think Franz Ferdinand. Nothing mind blowing is happening during this song but it definitely is a catchy song that you might want to put on before you go out on a Friday night. “E.L.A,” the second song on the EP trades in the dance vibe for garage rock. It has some a number of delightful parts such as the dirty descending lead guitar riffs combined with bells.  The highlight of the album for me was “Bang Kiss” which had the best vocal performance on the album.

There is a breakdown at around the one-minute mark where the vocalist goes off almost rapping with this British accent. He completely pulls it off and I was hoping for more before the song ended but didn't get any. “Cheetah Cheater” is an old English style punk song that feels visceral and ready to listen to at the pub while the EP closes with the anthemic “For Jill.”

This EP showcases a band that is still discovering their sound while displaying they have the chops to make a memorable riff. Keep your eyes on Generals as they are just beginning and seem to be on the right track.
