Fionn Connolly is a 16-year-old singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Exeter, Devon. He recently released a four-song EP entitled Goodnight from Paris in which he produced, recorded, mixed and mastered. It’s evident right off the bat that some production issues hold the songs back. For example, the dynamic range within the songs are very varied and are in desperate need of proper compression techniques. On top of that Connolly’s vocals aren't exactly striking. Some reverb or even auto tune would have helped some of the sour notes as well as creating some sense of space with the vocals. Despite these issues Connolly is a young songwriter who seems to be creating a foundation that he can build upon. The EP open with “Mistakes,” which starts with a capella vocal harmonies that quickly are joined by a lo-fi dirty sounding drum kit and bass. Once the verse hits Connolly adds layers of piano and synthetic strings to sing over. The difference in volume between the first verse and the chorus is noticeable and jarring. Not only are the vocals about five dbs louder but also the pulsating bass is much louder than anything else in the first verse. “Heart Strings” is a melancholy, piano-based song that Connolly says was influenced by artists like Billy Joel and Tom Odell. The song has some decent moments as well as some effective vocal harmonies. Connolly sings his heart out despite an uneven performance, “Green Eyes” explores the topic of young love while the closer “Goodnight from Paris” revolves around a sole piano and his voice. “Goodnight from Paris” had the strongest vocal performance amongst the four songs. Fionn Connolly has musical talent but he still has some work to do. Luckily, time is on his side. At sixteen years old he has time to refine some of the aspects that were lacking in his music.
