Hailing from Mexico City Fiction 8 is a three-piece band comprised of Diego Valencia (vocals, keyboards,), Juan Schietekat (drums) and MIguel Szekely (guitar) who recently released their self-titled debut EP Fiction 8 . The band has been playing together for about a year and even though their EP feels like a band who is still searching for their signature sound they successfully deliver a number of quality tunes that set them up as band that has potential. The music falls under the umbrella of indie rock although they occasionally blend in other elements such as funk into the mix. They get things going with one of the best songs on the album entitled “Lion.” They combine jangly guitars and bass with one of the most technically impressive drumbeat on the album. The vocalist sounds nothing like Thom Yorke but a couple of the guitar parts reminded of something you may have heard from Radiohead a couple of years ago. The second track “Hungry Ramiro” opens with an airy synth and bass before the drums hold down the beat. When the guitar enters its dance-y riff is reminiscent of something you would hear from Daft Punk. It’s a solid song with a good guitar solo but did have a very different energy than the opener. The highlight of the EP is a slower song entitled “Sofia.” Valencia delivers one of his most inspired vocal performances and the music is almost as catchy as the singing melody. The keyboard sound would have been slightly cheesy if it were by itself but it works wonderfully when combined with the other instruments. There are a number of strong moments on “Lil' Vampiah” while closer “Nothin’ To Say” has a light jazzy feel which sounded good on the band. Fiction 8 is a decent start for a band that is showing a lot of promise. Better production would have helped the impact of some of the songs but overall the EP is an enjoyable experience. Looking forward to how Figure 8 will evolve with their future releases.
