Exploded View is a three-piece rock band from Brooklyn, NY. Their first self-entitled debut is full of impassioned songs that burst with emotion and quality song writing. The album is a guitar-driven rock record that combines shoegaze, psych and post-punk. As you listen to this album it is obvious that these guys are playing live in a room and feel comfortable working with each other. Not unlike Husker Du or Guided by Voices these songs are gritty and prevail because of the pop that lies beneath the surface. The opener “High and Alone” is a great tune that has creative guitar riffs and screeching vocals. An awesome anthemic chorus delivers and instrumentals break down the song that rock hard. Not too shabby for a young band. The guys make good use of space on this song and really know how to play off of each other. ”Have and Hold” is another solid song that showcases some creative lead work on the guitar. I thought the best song on this album was the last one entitled “Alfred 2” which brought out a cool bass line and catchy vocals. The one thing I would like to see on their next album is a bit more variety - while the songs were good I felt they sounded a bit too similar at times. Overall, this is an encouraging debut that definitely is a great start to a band who has a lot of potential.
