The smooth folk vibes emitted by Ethan Lipkind on his first professionally recorded EP Come What May, are genuine in nature and undeniably strike a cord within the hearts and souls of its listeners. Lipkind is a multi-instrumentalist from New York who flourishes in both singing and songwriting. Come What May was birthed during his college years and the themes span emotions, confusions and confessions that everyone can relate to.

On the opening track “Long Island Sound” we get to indulge in Lipkind’s sweet, graceful and airy voice. His voice seems to drip over the subtle yet developed petals of the melody like fresh liquid dew in the morning hours. The song is characterized by a wavering guitar chord and delicate percussion as well as the usage of a few nuanced effects scattered along the track. The lyrics are beautiful as well; “Take my hand, take my heart and keep it.  As songbirds fly across horizons I lay her down and watch her drift beneath it.”

A song titled “Love,” is filled with none other than the obvious. In this song I start to hear subtle jazz and blues influences that make me envision Lipkind performing this track at some small and cozy coffee shop. There really is so much charisma and swagger laden in the vocals and they are received in an oh so genuine way. The saxophone could be what really sets it apart from the rest in regards to style; it gives the song a high level of class and an air of deep, true and everlasting “love.” As the lyrics proclaim; “Love is here and love is here to stay, love is everywhere my friend, there's no debate.”

Being produced and mastered by Alex Sugarman in Boston, the sound quality of the EP is of professional excellence and every instrument on the album gets its time to shine in the limelight. This album is a great one to listen to for anyone interested in modern folk music or ambient rock music. The sounds and lyrics are both entertaining in a simple and uplifting manner.
