The Guilty
self-released; 2014

3.5 out of 5

By Eva Cantillo

Enter Intruder, a heavy rock band out of Largo, Florida, brings us their first EP The Guilty. The four-piece band came together in January of 2013. Since then the young band has played local shows and concentrated on getting their first release out. The band is proud to say that this release was produced completely in-house; from recording to mixing and even the album art was created by the musicians. The style emitted from Enter Intruder could be classified as grunge rock while also a bit harder but also carrying a more alternative style.

The opening track on the album “We Are The Guilty” gives us a taste of what The Guilty is all about. The song begins with a heavy guitar chord and an abrupt drum pattern; I can imagine the drummer banging with all his might to create that pattern. There is no time spared to open up with the lyrics, “we have no answers here” and later on more details show that this song truly is about being guilty; “all the terrible things we did, we hid the evidence… no innocence to what we’ve done.”

The next track “Man or Machine” has a slower more passionate vibe, yet there are no guitars or drums spared; it is totally a grunge rock song. Vocals on this track seem to be a bit more varied and in between the chorus there is a really sweet guitar breakdown that then leads into lyrics that have a nice melody; “Now you see, this precinct is fake…show some integrity son, man or machine.” The song seems to be an anthem about the downfalls of modern day society. Towards the end, there is another breakdown that seems to represent a conscious contemplation before a completely maddening guitar chord starts to wipe out your memory.

Listening to Enter Intruder is quite a trip. Their EP is definitely only for people into hard rock or grunge rock similar to bands like Thrice, Emery, and Coheed & Cambria. Kudos to the band for creating and producing everything themselves because overall it is quite successful and they have created a dynamic, varied collection of edgy, hardrock songs that I can imagine are quite entertaining to see performed live.

Thank you for reviewing Enter Intruder's material. They are passionate about their music. Toothless is played with unleashed fury. No shallow simplistic lyrics in their songs.
