Dyska is a newly formed indie band from Norfolk, VA and Broken Things is their first release as a three-member band. Together, they epitomize sweet, seductive indie alternative rock that create an overall soothing and calming effect. This is achieved by the unique combination of the main vocalist’s talent and the reggae-inspired tinging effects and mellow guitars which all come together to induce a state of pure musical bliss. The first song on the EP is titled “Broken Things,” it starts off with a compelling and slightly unassuming guitar, and then it breaks off into a soaring guitar and drum pattern. Then it all settles into the vocalist’s lyrics; “it’s fine, it’s alright.” Soon, more lyrics illustrate the situation at hand, “I can never see your eyes because they are inside your head… open up, I’d like to come inside, I’d like to hear you sing of broken things.” The lyrics honestly illustrate a beautiful human dilemma when a relationship starts growing and things become uncovered in the process, sometimes unwillingly. "Of Gold" is another inspired effort that brings together inventive instrumental parts with an infectious vocal melody. The band plays it clean letting the space around the music breath. “Darling,” is a song that carries some great uplifting vocals that seem to effortlessly permeate the air and create a pure aura of musical happiness. The simple yet striking “ooo, darling, darling, please” that is the main chorus makes replaying this song an easy task. There is a jazzy piano breakdown that gives the song even more of a bluesy lovey-dovey feel to it. The music within this album could be classified as ambient indie rock and the three songs within this EP create beautiful scenery for both the heart and mind to indulge in. Recording quality is also quite successful making the release of a future full-length album something to look forward to.
