As I was listening to Dreamscope by David Hollandsworth I kept thinking to myself how much this music would fit a movie. The music is deep enough for it to stand on its own more often than not but it also has enough atmosphere that it could enhance visual film. Hollandsworth has been playing keyboards for 30-odd years but has only been composing and recording for the last several years. Dreamscope is a solid effort that but it is still a bit much to take in for being an instrumental, atmospheric album. At 19 tracks deep (this includes the bonus tracks) I found the music best served to accompany me while I was drawing, relaxing with a cup of tea or at low volumes while trying to take a nap. The first track, which is the title track, is something I imagine playing alongside Oblivion, Gravity or Space Odyssey 2001. The luminous, grandiose swells of synths conjure celestial planets, orbiting satellites and the cosmos. If anyone out there is making a sci-fi space epic you might want to take a listen. The second song “Road to You” contains slightly cheesy synths and a steady kick drum. Not quite as epic as the first song as this one is a bit more kinetic and could be additional to the soundtrack you hear while riding Space Mountain. Hollandsworth gets a bit new -agey on “Floating” while “Return to Avalon” is a return to club-like ethereal synths that seem harmonious with the heavens. “Virtual Memory” is the closest thing you have to a techno-inspired rave hit. The lunar dance party wouldn't be complete without angel-like synths and deep kick drum. The last song “Universe” is a large vacuous somewhat ominous manifestation. So is Hollandsworth biting off more than he can chew with this album? Well sometimes but when you name a song “Universe” you can't possibility think it will hold up to expectations. If you take it for what it’s worth “one man making ambient-infused electronic” it isn’t bad and seems destined to be paired up with some type of visual experience whether its a movie, used for a live experience, etc. Anyway I hear they are doing a remake of Cosmos with Neil deGrasse Tyson. If you are reading this Mr. Tyson you should get in touch with Hollandsworth and see if he will let you use some of his music in that Sagan remake you are doing.
