Dillon N' Ashe is a three-piece rock band that formed in 2013 and already have released a full-length ten-song album entitled Far Away. The members behind the music consist of brothers Jonathan Ellington (vocals/guitar) and Andrew Ellington (drums), and Josh Carter (bass). They aren’t many bells and whistles on this album. Instead it focuses on vocally charged songs that are well written. The band has the most in common with classic American rock but throw in a couple of zingers that is welcome but it also displays that the band may be struggling to find a definitive sound that people will recognize. The first track “Be My Woman” feels like it was straight out of 1972. It has grit, attitude and a riff that is reminiscent of Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin' Love.” The song also has a sultry breakdown and a nice lead guitar solo that made it one of the highlights on the album. “Far Away” is a pretty significant deviation from the first track as it revolves around an overt reggae riff and kind of mutates into a grunge song. As weird as that sounds it actually works. The band breaks out positive vibes with “Take Me Home” while “Long Time Gone” contains soulful organ and blues-inspired guitar. As the album progresses they unleash a couple of solid songs in which “Believe” and “Let Go” seem to be the most impactful. The closer “Bad Fork Valley” was an unexpected treat, which revolved around some technically and creatively impressive acoustic guitar playing. After I heard this I was hoping for more, so maybe it will be on their next release. Dillon N' Ashe may be in the embryonic stage of their career but it’s a pretty solid start. Aesthetically, the album sounds great and for how long they have been together the number of quality songs they have produced impresses me. I think they still are going to have to work a bit on establishing their “sound” but in the meantime Far Away is a solid effort.
