Déesse’s recent release “▼” contains catchy melodies, distorted guitars, and a powerful rhythm section that supports a mourning, dark voice that sings about loss and the endless search for love and desire. This album marries influences from the 80’s as well as punk. It could be described as “dark pop.” As you listen to it, you can hear some of the influences from bands like David Bowie, Joy Division and The Smiths.

The album opens with the deliciously dark number entitled “Manual.” As the bass plays root notes with the drums minimalistic approach, the crunchy guitars create a delicate dark ambience that fits like a glove around the singer’s voice. When the chorus kicks in you could swear the whole thing embodies the spirit of Morrissey as the lead singer sings “I’ve lost the manual, where is the manual tonight.” The chorus here is so infectious that I had a hard time getting to the second track. But I did. The second song “Changeless” is a guitar-driven track that has the singer channeling an Ian Curtis type vibe more then Morrissey this time. It works just as well and doesn’t feel like a departure from the first song. The longest song on the album entitled “Lost” starts off with a softly picked melody on an electric guitar as the singer yearns about loss. Things get gorgeously dark as upright bass and strings are introduced. The closing number “Cormorant” has an arppegiated synth and dance beat that will get fans of Joy Division excited. Overall this album borrows a lot from the past but is able to make it uniquely its own. If you like this band you will most likely appreciate what else is being put out by AF music as well.
