David Lindstrom is actually a project, started by Matthew Nelson from Minnesota. His sound incorporates atmospheric elements with multicultural music influences and a variety of tones throughout. The eight songs on this album combine a number of disparate elements creating unique soundscapes that often leads to ethereal passages that become almost overwhelming to the sense
As soon as the beginning track “Hearts Have Eyes” begins from the album In the Arms of Some Wingless Miracle, with its ominous child’s play tinkle and rumbling drums and taps, you realize you’d better strap yourself in and prepare for one heck of a ride. Each instrument, sound and effect is both independent of the others, yet completely complementary to the piece as a whole. He cuts up his vocals, uses some kind of sample that sound like people chattering in the background and as the song progresses it become a beautiful concoction of sounds that are rhythmically complex as well as creatively engaging. The song titles are all incredibly relevant to the sounds contained within as well. “The Tallest Tree” incorporates the sounds of birds chirping. “Where Wings Meet” gives the impression of soaring though the air, high above the world. His vocals go from poppy and lo-fi to sounding ominous as they blend and twist. The transition is truly something you just have to hear yourself. At about the 3:30 mark he hit a balance of pure originality. The sounds fill the frequency spectrum sounding like a phoenix landing upon the sun. “A Glass Future” makes heavy use of echoes, waves and reverbs, which adds texture to the piece. His vocals are very distant but work in context with the sounds happening around it. In the Arms of Some Wingless Miracle is the kind of experimental album that trudges forward and reinforces the fact that there is a endless amount of opportunity to create new experiences with sound. Great use of the ebbs and flows of sound along with sampling noises not normally present in music make this a great listen.
