Culled Fusion is a side project fronted by Eric Rantanen. Rantanen currently lives in North Carolina where he was happy to find a thriving music community. It helped shape his most recent release entitled Augury. Rantanen mentions “Augury is the first batch of a collection of songs written over the past five years. I think the songs have a retrospective feel as they are based on experiences, and how people deal with life. There might be a little Pink Floyd/retro progressive rock vibe to it.”
The EP opens with “Fallen” which is a pretty straightforward but catchy tune that’s well delivered. I loved the drumming on this song and thought the guitar work was slick. The vocals sounded good as well. There’s also a killer guitar solo. Overall, it was a strong opener. “Wrecked” has a little more grit to it. This song is a bit of a romp. I felt like it has that emotion in it which makes you want to move. I’m not sure if it’s a party song but it has a celebratory type of quality. The lyrics however paint a different story. “Another night at home, fearing tragedy / From the threat of that unseen / Taking comfort from those sagely wise decrees / Fools and traitors others be.” “Time To Say Goodbye” is the arguable highlight. I loved the ’70s feel to this song. The vocals are also delivered really well. There’s a good amount of emotion coming from every orifice of this song. The guitar work is crisp and tight. There’s even a duel guitar solo which I thoroughly enjoyed. “Lines” is a cool song. I loved the vibe that drips from this tune. It’s got that ’70s flavor again but this time more rock and prog based. I encourage you to listen to what is happening around the one-minute mark. The grove hits on multiple levels. This EP got better and better with every song. By the end I was really digging the different styles. The one thing that each song has in common is the solid song writing and delivery. Recommended.
