self-released; 2014

3.7 out of 5

By Eva Cantillo
Let yourself get lost in some authentic, pure, soulful surf-inspired rock music. This purely instrumental band called Coastal Break is out of Vancouver, Canada and is made up of four members that pump out a very eclectic style of sound that seems tinged by many different styles of music, resulting in a dynamic listen that never bores.

The opening track “Shipwrecked” gives us a taste of what their album Black Pine is all about. The acoustic jam-band style of the track is very appealing and really lets you fall into your own vibe and release from reality. It is great background music as well as perfect “active” music that can get you dancing and really feeling the grooves. As the song goes on, I seem to like it more and more. Highly recommend for injecting a little dose of joy into your life.

“Sagauro” has that same swagger as the opening track but this one seems to go above and beyond. With the addition of a horn toward the middle of the track, I feel a bit transcended to a Spanish coastal beach where I’m dancing with a marvelous sunset in the background, filled with excitement and mystery of what the dark night beholds.

“Roller Coaster” is righteously named as the track opens with a twang-y melody and soon takes you on an upward spiral of soul and funky beach-y vibes. The beat continues to thicken and heighten as the song goes on.

Black Pine is a great collection of well-produced songs and shows the talent and passion within this set of musicians. Sometimes it is not always easy to convey meaning and sentiments solely through the usage of sound; that is something reserved to only talented artists. Yet Coastal Break is able to achieve this because every track on the album makes you feel a different way and almost allows transcendence from the time and space that encapsulate the listener.
