Clear Stone

Supposed to be
self released; 2013

3.9 out of 5

The album Supposed To Be was recorded over a one year period where an entire home was transformed into a studio environment and utilized as a space for writing, production and tracking. According to the band there was a “30 x 50” chalet room where everything took place. To me it sounds like these conditions may have benefited the creativity and energy of this project. The recordings are beautifully captured and you immediately get the sense that the guys from Clear Stone are feeding off each other’s energy. Let’s get one thing straight about this album; it doesn’t care about what music the hipsters are listening to at the moment. These songs are a throwback to the classic rock era of the 1970’s. If you dig acts like Neil Young, early Tom Petty and Led Zeppelin, I’m pretty sure you will have an appreciation for what Clear Stone created.

The album kicks off with “Constance” a straightforward rock song. I for one appreciated the classic song writing style and a song that was free of any pretensions. One of the highlights is “You’re Beautiful” which tips its hat to “Pink Floyd.” The lyrics are simple and to the point in this song. Not a bad thing but I was hoping to hear lyrics that were a bit more poetic at times. The rockin’ “She Says” has distorted Zeppelin-esque guitar and will transport you straight to the seventies. If you just listen to “new music” this album may not be that appealing to you at first. I suggest spinning it a couple of times because the album starts to grow on you. For fans of 70’s rock this should be a no-brainer. Go and listen.
