Citroën is a three-piece hailing from Minneapolis that creates driving rock and roll combining gritty bass, explosive drums and distorted guitars. Not unlike Queens of the Stone Age and earlier Minus the Bear, the songs work because of the solid songwriting that lies beneath the rugged exterior. While establishing themselves as a great live act they started forming ideas for their debut EP entitled Anachronaut, which hoped to represent the diverse sounds of the band. The EP only has four songs but I think that it nicely captures the different sides of the band and where they can grow. The album kicks thing off right with “Shifting Sand” which rocks out and has a great energy. You can’t help but hear the resemblance of the singer’s voice with Josh Homme when the chorus arrives. Not a bad thing as I always dug Queens of the Stone Age. “Sea Wolf” brings things down a notch and shows that they have the ability to constrain themselves and write a thought-provoking ballad. I felt like the third song revisited some of the abilities they displayed on their first song (except the incredibly cool electronic, lead breakdown!) while the last song was not something I expected at all. “Terminal Bliss” is a subdued dance number that has synths and an electronic drumbeat. I even felt like the vocals were sung differently almost sounding like something I would hear from TV on the Radio. Not bad. This is good start that does exactly what they intended and shows off their eclectic set of skills. I’m interested to see how their full-length turns out.
