Forming in Boston in 2012, Cheat Sheets is a three-piece band consisting of Erik Szyska (guitar/vocals), Zoe Wyner (bass/vocals) and Darren Perocchi (drums) who recently wrapped up their four-song EP entitled No Comply. The EP was recorded on tape at their practice space as they were trying to time it right as to when to record in order not to pick up the spill of the metal bands in the next room. These songs are pretty straightforward garage rock wrapped with good pop sensibilities. The guitars sound great, the drums are dry and the bass is solid. Sometimes I felt the vocals were a bit too treated (too many effects) and would have liked to hear them more prominent in the mix. It doesn't take much time to get accustomed to these songs. You have heard these types of riffs before but it really doesn't take away much from the songs. They are compact, to the point and catchy. The album starts with “Born in the 70’s.” The first thing you will notice is the guitar tone. Its got this nice warm tone that is inviting and isn't shrill. The song is a throwback to the early 90’s punk/alternative scene - think a tamed Pixies or even Nirvana. I enjoyed Wyner’s backup vocals toward the end of the song and was hoping to hear a bit more from her vocal abilities on the album which does happen . “Got Nothin” is a notable pop song that mentions getting in touch with your faith while “Science” fell a bit flat. The album closes with “Live From The Satellite Lounge” and has big crunchy guitar riffs that seemed more reminiscent of a band like The Who then a 90’s alternative band. It was a good closer and arguably the best song on the album. Hopefully the band can find a way to keep playing and producing more material now that the singer lives in LA and the rest of the band lives in Boston because I would be looking forward to a full length.
