The number five seems pretty significant to the band Catching Quiet. They are a five-piece hailing from the five boroughs of New York City that just released their debut five-song EP entitled Argyle Park. The album has all the elements of classic pop-punk including distorted guitars and power chords but also some that hint towards a more traditional rock band. Take for example “In The Breeze,” which has too slow of a BPM for traditional pop-punk but sounds just about right for a rock song. The drummer snare work is top notch while the guitars sound warm rather than shrill high frequencies that often appear on albums such as these. I didn’t mind the vocals as they sit comfortably in the mix rather than laying on top of it. The lead vocalist uses like to play on words as he sings “You are the rain, Falling down from the sky/And touching everything.  

Argyle Park has some initial energy that is presented to us in “The New Manhattan.” The song is not innovative but does bring us catchy lyrics and some decent guitar rock. It’s a good opener for sure even if the song was a bit predictable. “Monument” does a good job of taking on a classic subject like “boy meets girl” and interjecting a couple of twists and turns with lines such as “ I don’t need a lover, I just need someone to listen. It’s always been implicit and I guess we’ll always stay this way.” The album closes with “Survivor’s Guilt” which is most likely to be the biggest hit on the EP as it follows a formulaic structure that most of the masses will eat up.
