Camisado is Jenny Dang and Matt Gurgo and they make unapologetically infectious pop music that feels like a dose of optimism (even when it has moments of melancholy) for your ears. Their self-titled EP, Camisado, is something you won't hear blasting out of a 30-year-old male’s car as he goes out for a joyride but you might find in some hidden playlist on his iPod.
There is no hiding that the six songs on this EP sound professional. You can hear everything perfectly - in fact the production is a bit too good for my taste and sounds too clean and commercial. For example, dirtying up the drums a bit could have given the album more of an edge. The album starts with the best song on the album called “The English Patient Pt.2.” It’s bubble gum pop at its best, lasting about two minutes that doesn't have any filler. The song doesn’t waste any time as it doesn't have any type of intro but instead decides to jump into the verse. As the song progresses Dang and Gurgol harmonize throughout over a canvas of crisp acoustic guitar and orchestral strings. “EST” is another tune that follows a similar structure to the first song while “South By” has no trace of melancholy and relies on unbridled exuberance to deliver its message. The album closes with “YCFCH” which is the shortest song (under two minutes) on the album but doesn't disappoint. This is easily digestible bubblegum pop that is just as forgettable as it is fun. It’s not cathartic, won't change your perspective and isn't particularly innovative but it just might put a smile on your face that you didn't know was there. It is recommended.
