Astral Planes used to be Salute the Moon, but let’s be honest, that name just wasn’t cool enough. AP began in November 2012 when vocalist David Babb met up with guitarist Tyson Francis. The two worked together crafting ideas and practicing under the intentions of a duo, but that all changed when they crossed paths with drummer Matt Dietrich and bassist Chris Garneau. Not only did these fine fellows hold down the rhythm section, they also contributed to the recording process being well-versed engineers. Babb and Francis had the songwriting part down and now their better half was complete. A recording was only a little time away. Their first EP, From Behind The Couch, was recorded in March, 2014 and released on April 20th, 2014. The EP has a great sound and embodies a bold approach to recording being it was all cut literally in a living room. AP is no doubt a talented group, but more so, they have a fantastic marketing and design concept. The album art portrays the feeling of the album in an intricate yet palatable image and their website is dripping with cool – the colors, the aesthetic, the complimentary illustration, the distressing, the flow, the usability. It’s all intact and ready for some excitable browsing. “Martyr” works a powerful and melodic riff into the mix with great upper neck tone. The drums are relentless and driving with a few breaks in the volume for vocal take over. “I’m growing tired of being the martyr,” sings Babb. I think we all can relate to that feeling whether it’s related to friendships or family, but most often relationships with significant others. The third track, “Moon Song” verses a little hard on the cult indie vibe; sprinklings of new age flower power and a dash of drugs are the main ingredients here. The song twinkles like a foggy southern night, but doesn’t stop there. The vocals begin to join in doubling and tripling creating a chant like quality, reinforcing the feeling of sedation beyond any innate euphoria. The organ kicks out the jams on “Don’t Know How to Lie.” It’s roaring and upbeat with orchestrated hits and powerful backbeat. The vocal harmonies are melodies are the best on the album and was a triumphant closer. Overall, there are a number of inspired moments on this EP that you won't want to miss.
