The secret is out about Adventure Galley. Their first studio album, Anywhere That’s Wild is gorgeous, modern and timeless and one that the likes of David Byrne and Morrisey could get behind. Even though it was released last November, Anywhere That’s Wild is a time capsule through the last three decades, reaping everything that is energetic and modern from music from the Smiths, to the Killers, up to Arcade Fire. Adventure Galley is signed with Internet Piracy Records. Childhood friends, David Mills and Aaron Johnson, formed adventure Galley. The band has been gaining steam since 2009, playing shows to crowds all over the West Coast. This album was recorded mostly at Kingsize Soundlabs in Los Angeles, California. The tracks were worked on again in Portland, Oregon at The Burrows, then again at Art Institute of Seattle. The many reworkings of exacting sound on this album lend the balanced pop-sense and organized punk rock, professional feel of the music. “Place Essex” makes me feel like I know a secret. It is beautifully composed and joyful to listen to. The voice and guitar work are a throwback to something older, reminiscent to the ancient West Coast days of music, tinged with the a surfy, Beach Boys sound. Play “Cult Classic” on a day you don’t want to ever forget. This song is about taking chances, and remembering things when they are truly good. This song emits a feeling, for me it is the same feeling I get when I listen to The The’s song “This is the Day." Its also hard not to notice some similarities between in vocal styles between the vocalist and Ian Curtis from Joy Division. “Condemned Habits” is heavy and electronic. The dancey track is one of the best on the album.“Weekend Lovers” is fresh and light. It contains a fast paced element that is pure energy. Lyrics throughout the album are deep and crisp and have the right amount of detached meaning. The lyrics and voice work really set a standard for the music to follow, creating a musically cohesive album. Adventure Galley has nailed this era’s current, pop-centered sound. I wait with anticipation for their next move.
